Not to get all Eeyore on you, but as summers go, I’d have to say 2005 qualifies as one of the single shittiest on record. Even before the horrible events of this week, which have left the Gulf Coast sliding into mass squalor and civil discontent, or the stampede in Iraq that killed 950 people two days ago (going nearly unnoticed by the press), we were already slogging through the deadliest month for US troops in Iraq since the beginning of this year, along with the simultaneous smear campaign against Cindy Sheehan (the sole upside of which was that it forced the right to finally reveal their hand: They’ve got nothing.
