As I mentioned in last week’s discussion of octopus-chomping, I’ve always prided myself on an ability to withstand strong or shocking imagery in movies. I once ruined a perfectly good first date by insisting that the hapless guy, a French kid named Patrick, watch In the Realm of the Senses with me — his first time, my fifth or sixth. I won’t give away the famously harsh ending of that wonderful film — one of the best movies ever made about sexual passion — but I never heard back from Patrick again. Dommage. Intending to tease you, they go a bit too far, and later, while you’re sitting in the theater, his or her words pop into mind and you find yourself one step further ahead in the tale than you should be and surprises have been ruined. With Frank DarabontТs THE GREEN MILE raking in the dough at the cineplexes these past few weeks, it seems appropriate that Warner Brothers has released his other prison flick, also based on a Stephen King yarn — THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. Both films offer excellent performances in the leads and intriguing stories. Both are set in prisons and deal with men who may not be guilt of the crimes for which theyТve been sentenced. THE GREEN MILE deals with the supernatural — an angel on earth imprisoned and on death row for murdering two children. THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION keeps its feet on the ground.
